On December 11 Russan soprano Galina Vishnevskaya passed away. She was an incredible opera singer, famous for everything from Verdi to Shostakovich to Mussorgsky to Puccini. In 1955 she married cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, and together they left the Soviet Union in the 70's. I'm a massive fan of her recording of Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtensk and Mussorgsky's Songs and Dances of Death in particular. Also, in 2007 she played the lead role in a filmed called Alexandra which is definitely worth checking out. I've had her autobiography on my book shelf for quite a while but it's about time I start reading it. For now, enjoy her voice and remember her:
